History

The student chapter was founded on 17th November 2009 by Uwe Bog (President), Khibria Chwodhury (Vicepresident), Alexandra Graham (Secretary), Thomas Zebrowski (Treasurer) and Andreas Frölich (Outreach Officer) following Kurt Busch’s (Faculty Advisor) presentation of OSA’s programme for student chapters, by then officially named OSA Student Chapter Karlsruhe. Every year OSKarians hold board elections. But there are no former OSKar members. No matter where they are and what they do now, we remember and appreciate the contribution of our board alumni into the growth and elaboration of OSKar.

2016

In 2016, OSKar focused on outreach and getting exposure in the Karlsruhe academic and social community. An outreach grant was provided by SPIE allowing OSKar to participate in community projects sponsored by KIT such as “Kinder Uni”, in which young children are exposed to fun scientific and technological projects and gives a further insight to research groups on how to make science, and for OSKar the optical sciences, more accesible to the general public.

As a tradition, the OSKar community participated in travelling lecturer activities involving career opportunities with Dr. Arlene Smith, and multi-photon bio-imaging with Prof. Chris Xu, as well as an additional talk with the Fraunhofer institute by Dr. Falk Eilenberger about non-linear optics.

Excursions to Karl Storz and Sick AG provided the students with further career opportunities in the industry and for internship positions to consider for the rest of the year.

2015

In 2015, OSKar organized the industry excursion to Agilent Technologies in Waldbronn, where students could learn about the optical research done by one of the leading companies in spectroscopic analysis. A visit to TRUMPF was also scheduled earlier in 2015, a company specializing in laser material processing.

During this year, the travelling lecturer, Tobias Scheuer from the University of Tel-Aviv in October, about Plasmonic Holography.

The most outstanding event in 2015 was the planning and execution of the IONS Karlsruhe 2015 conference, during the last week of June, gathering young students and scientist from over 15 countries. During the three days of the conference, the multidisciplinary attendees had the chance of sharing their latest topics of research, as well as enjoying the beautiful summer time in the city of Karlsruhe.

2014

In 2014, current Master students had an opportunity to find a future workplace in SCHOTT or Precitec on the Icebreaker day. Also, OSKar organized the excursion to Polytec, where students could learn about modern technologies of light measurements.

During this year, students got a great chance to visit popular lectures of Prof. Carsten Rockstuhl (KIT), travelling lecturer Prof. Lorenzo Pavesi (University of Trento) and even of the President of SPIE Dr. H. Philip Stahl (NASA Marshall Space Flight Center).

In between OSKarians were offered different leisure activities, such as barbeque, pizza nights, Stammtisch and Lasertag.

2013

In the beginning of 2013, OSKarians had a possibility to learn about adaptive optics by virtue of Fraunhofer Institute of Optronics, System technic and Image analysis, Ettlingen. Dr. Szymon Gladysz gave a talk on Adaptive optics and then showed how it works on practice in the labs of the Institute. Students also had a possibility to witness the whole lens manufacturing process in Leica, Solms.

In April, OSKar organized the Internship Icebreaker day. Students got a chance to introduce themselves to representatives of OSRAM and Precitec. Also, students could improve their leadership at the workshop organized by SPIE Student chapter in Munich. At the end of the year a traveling lecturer Prof. Dr. Mo Li from the University of Arizona gave a talk on Photonic devices.

In addition, OSKarians could visit monthly Stammtisch that became a tradition already and a Poster contest that was organized for the first time.

2012

As a highlight of 2012 OSKar hosted IONS-Germany for the first time. During this dual social and educational event, we welcomed fellow German student chapters of OSA and SPIE in Karlsruhe. The technical part of this event comprised lab tours as well as lectures on Quantum Optomechanics (held by Prof. Aspelmeyer and Prof. Kippenberg) and Optical Communications (by Prof. Leuhtold). The numerous socializing opportunities included e.g. a pub crawl and a barbeque.

Also, in 2012 OSKar published the short film “Studieren mit Lichtgeschwindigkeit”. The video aims at attracting more highschool and undergraduate students to optics study program, but it has also become quite popular among the local optics community.

In addition, we continued the successful events of the previous years, including the Stammtisch and the Internship Icebreaker. We visited several research institutes and companies such as Trumpf-Laser in Schramberg. The year ended with our guest lecturer Prof. Mansuripur.

2011

2011 started with the second Internship Icebreaker event, which was adopted to be held annually. We maintained contact to the other student chapters by participating in the second IONS-Germany meeting in Erlangen and visiting the student chapter in Besancon, France. To further serve the local student community we organized two field trips and a laser game during an optics-dedicated symposium. An important part of our activities in 2011 was OSKar’s booth at KIT Open day, where we took the opportunity to promote optics within the general public.

2011 also brought two important achievements for OSKar: After a long process, we were finally recognized by the German authorities as a legal entity, a so called “eingetragener Verein” on June 6th with all the obligations and privileges that this entails. But surely the highlight for our chapter was the successful application for OSA’s Excellence Award for student chapters, which is awarded once annually. We competed against 18 other student chapters from all over the world for this price and won.

2011

2010

OSA officially recognized the student chapter on 21st January 2010. Attempts to enlarge the scope of chapter members started in January 2010 already with the first Stammtisch at Vogelbräu, which was held monthly at different locations ever since.

The first projects attacked were the Optics Visualized Contest held in June 2010 and the Internship Icebreaker in April 2010. Whereas the responsibility for the Optics Visualized Contest was with the chapter’s officers, the Internship Icebreaker was organised entirely by non-board chapter members. The officers only took the initiative when setting up the organising team. During the IONS-Germany meeting in Berlin in June 2010 we introduced ourselves to the German OSA student chapters.

Due to a rapid growth in the number of members and interest for more activities and events during the year, the board was working on the necessary documents to become a Verein by German law. This included the drafting of new, more elaborate bylaws, which could finally be established during the annual meeting in the beginning of November. This was also the point when the student chapter was officially renamed into Optics Students Karlsruhe (OSKar). The year 2010 ended with hosting OSA travelling lecturer Dr. James Bergquist.
