Master Programs

At the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, there are some opportunities for graduate students to specialize in the field of optics and photonics. Besides the Master program of the Karlsruhe School of Optics & Photonics several departments offer courses related to optics.

All Master Programs listed here are full-time with a length of two years. In case of questions regarding studying optics at the KIT just write us an e-mail. Your questions will be answered by students specialized in this area.

Optics & Photonics

The Karlsruhe School of Optics & Photonics (KSOP) has developed an interdepartmental M.Sc. Program in Optics & Photonics. Completion of the program requires three semesters of lecture and laboratory courses, followed by a Master’s thesis of six months. The program, completely taught in English, aims to attract students from abroad, supporting the best candidates with a scholarship. As it is interdisciplinarily established, students from different backgrounds can apply (e.g. natural scientists, engineers, mathematicians and computer scientists).

Due to the inhomogeneous backgrounds, the first semester comprises adjustment courses such as Modern Physics and Control Systems; as well as soft skills and cultural integration courses. In the third semester a specialization in one of the five research areas of KSOP is scheduled: Photonic Materials and Devices, Advanced Spectroscopy, Biomedical Photonics, Optical Systems and Solar Energy. Moreover, during this Master the students have the opportunity of getting experiences in international companies in Germany, with the 8-week internship that is also part of this program. KSOP is one of the partners in EUROPHOTONICS Erasmus Mundus and Europhotonics POESII programs . Further details are available on the KSOP website.

Electrical Engineering and Information Technologies

Another Master Program related to optical technologies available at the KIT is provided by the faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technologies. For the completion of this program, again three semesters of lecture and laboratory courses, followed by a Master’s thesis of six months, is required. In addition, candidates have to serve an internship. To specialize in the field of optics, students may choose “Studienmodelle” like Optische Technologien, Optische Kommunikationstechnik, Mikro-, Nano-, Optoelektronik, where most of the courses are taught in German. In addition, one can focus on optical communication systems within Studienmodell 17 Information and Communication, where all courses are in English and which is also available as an Erasmus Mundus program. For further details see the website of the faculty.

The faculty of physics offers a program to obtain the degree M.Sc. in Physics. Its composition of courses comprises three main physical subjects differing in expenditure of time (Vertiefungsfach (main subject) 24 ECTS, Ergänzungsfach (supplementary subject) 14 ECTS and Nebenfach (complementary subject) 8 ECTS). The specialization areas in this Master program are for experimental physics: optics and photonics, condensed matter, nano-physics or particle physics. Apart from that, the elective subject (Wahlpflichtfach 8 ECTS) will offer a broad range of topics from other faculties. With its emphasis on mathematics this includes topics like Nano-Optics, Nonlinear Optics or Numerical Methods in Photonics. A preliminary list is available for download.
